Ford Crossflow / X-Flow / KENT
The Kent Ford X-flow engine appeared on the Ford Cortina MK2 and is distinguished from its predecessor the Ford Pre X-Flow by its cylinder head with intake and exhaust on opposite sides (when looking at the car from the front, carburettor on the left and exhaust on the right).
These engines also differ from pre-x-flow engines in that the combustion chamber is no longer in the cylinder head but on the piston (hence the nickname BIP engine = Bowl in Piston). Some early cylinder heads still have an integrated combustion chamber.
The first blocks had a foundry number 681F and a displacement of 940cc, 1098cc, 1298cc and 1599cc.
Found in the Ford Escort MK1 and MK2, Cortina MK2 and MK3, Capri MK1 and MK2 as well as some Transits, this engine is generally equipped with a Ford / Motorcraft IV single-barrel carburetor, but the 1.3 and 1.6GT were equipped with a Weber 32/36 DGV carburetor.
In 1970, Ford introduced the 711M version of this engine, with thicker walls, a completely flat cylinder head, rectangular bearings, wider tappets and a different crankshaft seal.
The 711M is offered in 1300cc and 1600cc. The height of the block allows this difference in displacement with the 1600 which is 7/16'' taller and it is possible to visually distinguish between a 1300 and 1600 by checking the distance between the water pump and the cylinder head.
The 1300 is struck with the references 711M 6015 AA on the block while the 1600 ends with BA.
This engine also equips the Fiesta MK1 1300 and 1600 of the 80s with the 711M block but without side engine mounts, a shorter water pump.
