Ford Type 9 (5-speed)
The Type 9 gearbox, based on the Type E gearbox, was the first 5-speed gearbox manufactured by Ford. It had a cast iron main casing with an aluminum gearbox tail.
Often used for 5-speed gearbox conversions on Ford Escort MK1/MK2 models, it is most often fitted as original equipment on:
- Ford Capri 1.6 / 2.0 from February 1983
- Ford Capri 2.8 from Nov 1982
- Ford Sierra 1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 up to Dec 1988
- Ford Sierra XR4i
- Ford Sierra XR4x4 2.8
Although some later versions of this gearbox have a clutch bell integrated into the main casing, they generally have a removable bell and there is even a 4-wheel drive version (for the very first XR4x4s).
23-spline main/input shaft, Ø 1". Oil capacity 1.9 liters (1.25 for 4x4 versions)
